Pilates is a set of exercises, stretches and movements for improving strength, flexibility, control and co-ordination. There is a lot of emphasis on moving slowly, carefully and precisely, rather than just repetition. 'Contrology' was invented by Joe Pilates in the 1920s and re-branded the 'Pilates method' after his death. The emphasis in Pilates is very much on the bio-mechanics of movement and the techniques are optimised for the neurophysiology of muscle recruitment and co-ordination.
